Newell Charged by FA

The Football Association have charged Luton Town manager Mike Newell with abusive and/or insulting words towards match officials.

Mike was sent to the stands, at Preston on Saturday, after his outburst at the fourth offiicial, who seemed unable to bring the referee's attention to Mike's intended substitution for some 4 minutes.

He has until 28th February to respond to the charge, although it seems pretty clear cut to me!

Marlon Beresford was also sent off in the late stages of the match, contrary to the Laws of the game, and of course, the FA allowed his subsequent appeal to leave him available to play against Cardiff City last night.

It would seem that further words may have been spoken after the game but Mike was quoted in his post match interview as saying: 'I had a ruckus with the ref and the fourth official and got sent off.

'I don't see the point of a fourth official, and I don't like incompetence and arrogance. I can't handle it and I lost my temper. I can spot it very early.

'I was annoyed it took five minutes to get a sub on for an injured player, I was not pleased.

'It was never a sending-off for the penalty. The game is going mad and it's mental - it's frustrating.'

Looks like a nice seat in the stand, and the FA's fingers in his wallet beckon for Mike in March!

I really don't understand this attitude of managers not being able to question referees it's rediculous (or however you spell it!)

They can discuss things with referees but cannot verbally abuse them. Apart from undermining the refs, who - let's be fair - get 90+% of the decisions correct in a game, it is a matter of respect for a fellow human being. Refs don't make mistakes deliberately and there is no better method of arbitrating the laws than an impartial official.

The standard of officials gets worse and this sounds like another example. No wonder people get wound up.
