After a disappointing run of results in which the Hatters drew two and lost two, The Hatters got back to winning ways with what should have been a comfortable victory over HAyes and Yeading. Despite dominating the game and creating more chances than they have had in five games, they squandered the opportunity to ameliorate their goal difference and and enjoy themselves. Instead a 2-0 half time lead became 2-1 after sloppy defending and then 3-1 and cruising another defensive lapse saw their hosts score a second leaving the Town hanging on for vistory in the end. Nothing is ever easy with Luton Town FC! It is so frustrating!
wo first half goals in six minutes from Liam Hatch and Claude Gnakpa from a penalty kick gave the Hatters a deserved lead and set the opposition up for a drubbing.
However, this is Luton Town and despite continuing their domination with some slick football, numerous chances went begging while the opponents rarely raised the energy to attack.
Going in at half time with only two goals to show for their complete superiority, Luton came out and continued where they left off.
owever, it was their hosts who scored from a rare attack when Justin Cochrane was allowed to hit a curling shot past the Mark Tyler, who was seriously unimpressed with his defence for allowing him so much time.
Hayes and Yeading continued to defend under the cosh as Luton clearly felt they could score more but had to wait until the 74th minute for substitute Tom Craddock, who had been livened up a lot from being benched for the start, to hit what appeared to be the killer blow giving the town a 3-1 lead.
Still the hosts showed very little in response and we were surely going to cruis home. Not so!
As the Hatters kept possession and raided at will without a decent end product the game moved to within two minutes of the 90 when Tom Cadmore was awarded the home team's man of the match accolade just seconds before another rare attack saw him head home unmarked from a deep cross. Not half as cross as Tyler was though!
Now the nerves set in as Luton realised that with 4 minutes added they could end up with egg on their faces. Indeed they were so nervy that they stopped attacking and might have lost two points in the dying moments when Watkins almost got the ball in the net after running up the motorway that was supposed to blocked off and it took a good effort from Tyler to prevent the embarrassment.
On the up side Luton played some slick passing football. On the down side they really must learn to kill teams off and take their chances. During the past five games Luton have lost the opportunity of putting some serious pressure on their rivals at the top end of the table, and should by now have been much closer. At least they hung on for all three points at Hayes.
