Norwich bid for Luton's Howard

Norwich City manager Nigel Worthington has made an official bid for Luton striker Steve Howard.

Having been tracking Leeds' Rob Hulse and having been put off by their £2 million asking price he has turned to Howard and to MK Dons' striker Izale McCleod.

Ironically, Newell is also a fan of McCleod.

Worthington is reported as saying:

"Steve Howard is another option as far as the big man is concerned up front.

"He is somebody we have inquired about and we are trying to follow that one up.

"That's maybe within our capabilities, so we are waiting on a reply from Luton.

"We have made an offer and we are waiting to see what they come back with."

Mike Newell has said that none of the players he wants to keep are for sale, but, as with interest in Carlos Edwards, we must wait and see whether any offers for our players are within the scale that forces Town to sell.

Newell is not in the business of selling for bargain prices, so I would expect him to be looking for close to £1 Million before he would consider letting Howard go and something similar for Carlos Edwards.

if you sell him, it could be a loss but i think you could find an equally as good striker. do you think you'll stay up or maybe, even go up?

Players of Howard's style are (now) few and far between; 'old fashioned' number nines are becoming an endangered species now that Alan Shearer has retired and the likes of Steve Howard are in their thirties. If Norwich paid us a million for Stevo AND if Newell had one or two players already earmarked to replace him then I'd reluctantly see him leave. If the offer is nearer £500K then I'd turn it down and hope to see him stay until the end of his contract. We are good enough for a mid-table place but in order to improve on last season and go for a play-off place we need to keep all our sqaud and bring in at least three new faces with a right back, a centre half and a striker the priority. It's not Newell's style but I'd like to consider bringing in one or two young Premier League prospects (like W*tford did with Foster and Eagles last season) on long term loans.

Thought you'd be looking at bigger names and scorers than Steve Howard, he seems like a one man club and wouldn't cut it anywhere else.

He, has become a little complaicant of late. And Slow. He cant get to the Ball so much these days though granted he is a lump. I dont think he has much left any more.A Younger quicker Striker would be more suite to style .Unfoutunetly Feeney hasn,t quite delivered so perhaps a replacement for Howard is needed......Shame Really, he allmost made Harford status !!!!!!!
LORD LUTON
He has scored alot of important goals for Luton and will be missed.

So far as Worthington is concerned, he wants a target man who can hold the ball up. 30, you say? Iwan Roberts managed to fill the requirements that Worthington wanted at a similar age, and Rob Earneshaw needs a bigger player to feed him decent scoring opportunities. The thing is about all this speclation, there isn't a great deal of discussion about it on any of the LTFC sites, so it is either a done deal or below even considering...
