Luton target Chris Shuker had agreed in principle to remain at Barnsley after an offer of an extension to his contract was made.
Shuker claims that when he returned from holiday the offer was withdrawn after he had tols other interested clubs that he was likely to stay at Oakwell.
Barnsley chairman Gordon Shepherd responded: 'I like the young man but we could not go along with not knowing what was going to happen.
'I was told by his agent that he took a holiday to think about his future. He didn't come back to us in the time scale.
Shuker now has to find himself another club, with Mike Newell having said he was monitoring the situation before he went on his holiday.
