No transfers for Luton

While new Sunderland boss Roy Keane was spending in excess of £2 million on six new players, there were no changes at Kenilworth Road.

Whether there were any negotiations which did not bear fruit, we will have to await Mike Newell's next comments to find out, but it leaves us short in Central defence just as the midnight sale of Curtis Davies did this time last year.

I firmly believe that that was the reason we failed to make the play-offs last season and I hope Mike Newell has learned the lesson and will be actively pursuing a loan player for the role over the next two weeks, as the window remains open for loans for that period.

The Town boss was true to his word, however; he said that he would not panic buy, or get caught up in the last minute hype buying players he had not seen or who were not on his selected target list.

The inactivity has a bright side - no one went from the squad at the last minute this time round!

Carlos Edwards is a Luton Town player at least until January.

There were some interesting moves on the last day and many of the clubs anticipating being challengers for promotion have made very good investments which leave Luton Town relatively in a weaker position than than they were in on Wednesday.

Coventry spent over a million on strikers as their McSheffrey money burned a hole in their pocket, and it will be interesting to see if the arrival of Roy Keane and his six new players will see Sunderland turn from relegation candidates to promotion challengers.
