Escaping the Quagmire!

Escaping the Quagmire!

Not an experience to be repeated!

Five years ago when the draconian points penalty imposed upon us resulted in Luton Town Football Club from falling out of the Football League, I doubt many of us thought we`d be in the wilderness for so long.

With our proud heritage I for one thought we`d climb straight back up, blitzing our way through Conference football.

But it wasn`t like that, we huffed and we puffed, we played various styles of football but every attempt to climb back into the Football League was thwarted, heartbreakingly in some cases with those Play-Off Final trials and tribulations.

I was beginning to get resigned to the fact that perhaps we`d never make it. Various managers - Richard Money, Gary Brabin and Paul Buckle came and went but without delivering what they`d promised.

Thankfully along came John Still and the former Dagenham man, after overhauling the playing staff, got us promoted and back into the promised league and, in doing so, made himself a Hatters legend.

One of Still`s unsung heroes, Jake Howells, has been along the same journey as ourselves and in the local media Jake has given a brief remark that kind of sums up that first season where, as I mentioned, I thought we`d blitz our way through non-league football, with Howells remarking,

"I didn`t realise how difficult the league was, but when we did the first season, I knew from then it wasn`t easy."

Personally I`d read comments from other players that had taken the same sad journey as us but ignored them, I guess at my peril. Now we`re back where we, the supporters feel, we belong, it`s important to celebrate the promotion moment but far more important to make sure we don`t ever drop back into the quagmire that is the Conference!
