Luton boss reprimanded

Luton Town released a press statement today after members of the board met with Manager Mike Newell to discuss his post - match remarks on Saturday, in which he criticised Chairman Bill Tomlins and the role of female officials in Championship football.

His apology to Amy Rayner and to anyone whom he offended with those remarks went a long way towards saving his skin, and he is said to have apologised to the Board and accepted his remarks were inappropriate.

The Statement read:

'Representatives of the Board of Directors of Luton Town Football Club met today with the Club's Manager, Mike Newell, to discuss the comments made by him in the post match press conference at last Saturday's game versus Queens Park Rangers.

'As previously advised the Club disassociates itself totally with the comments he made regarding the assistant referee, which are completely unacceptable to the Club and have accepted the Manager's explanation and his subsequent public apology.

'The Manager was also asked to explain his comments about the Board and he has accepted that his remarks were totally inappropriate.

'The Board have severely reprimanded Mike Newell for the comments made and have warned him that any repetition of such conduct will not be tolerated. The Manager gave the necessary assurances and apologised for the comments he made and would like to thank the Board for its support and understanding on this matter.

This reaction was predictable bearing in mind Mike's popularity with the fans, and the fact that the majority of fans are frustrated by the lack of progress in securing investment for the running of the club and the development of the team, or to move forward in the relocation of the club to a new stadium.

The club has been beseiged with messages of support for the under-fire but immensely popular manager.

Had the board sacked Mike Newell there would have been a domino effect with protests about all the fans' dissatisfaction, and Bill Tomlins position would have been untenable.

Well the sexists win again. i bet if the Referees Assistant was black he would have been out of there as quick as Ron Atkinson. he has not retracted his views about women in football dont forget. i will support the team but will not support Newell and his out dated views. Chris
