Luton sign Spring

Luton have signed Matthew Spring from local arch-rivals Watford for a fee of £200K. The fee could rise to £300K depending on add-ons.

Matthew left Luton in 2004 for Leeds United and then signed for the Hornets a year later and played a big part in their promotion campaign.

Aidy Boothroyd wished him well and thanked him for his contribution in their glory year.

The signing will provoke a mixed reaction among Hatters fans, firstly because he was perceived as having jumped a sinking ship during the financial problems which beset Luton in 2004 and of course, because he did the unthinkable and joined Watford.

However, a man has to earn a living and when he left Leeds, Luton were in no financial position to offer him a contract, and I hope that fans will remember the wonder goal he scored for Luton against Watford in their famous cup victory at Vicarage Road and for the excellent service he gave the Town when he was previously at Kenilworth Road.

I for one believe this to be a very good signing and his ability to win the ball in midfield and to set up attacking play, together with his powerful shooting capability, wil prove to be a great asset to the Hatters, as they try to remedy the difficult situation they find themselves in after a poor run through November.
