Just one point taken from the last six available, in matches against two of our promotion rivals, have seen those seeds of doubt, relating to our promotion campaign, starting to be sown.

On Tuesday night the Hatters made the long trek to Cumbria, to take on a Carlisle United side who had lost their last four games and had also failed to score a goal.

Arriving for a fixture like that can work in two ways, you can either take advantage of your opponent`s poor form keeping their poor run going, or you can come up against a side who have a resolve to turn things around.

On Tuesday Luton were caught between the devil and the deep blue sea as far as the above options were concerned.

Carlisle failed to score for a fifth game on the bounce but Luton couldn`t grab that crucial goal that would have given them the three points to bring back south to Bedfordshire.

The game turned into a feisty affair with very few clear-cut chances being created.

The early feistiness saw Danny Hylton and Ollie Lee booked, as well as the Carlisle player Luke Joyce.

The Hatters first chance fell to Hylton who, collecting a pass from Pelly Ruddock, drilled a low shot across the face of the goal.

Carlisle United responded with an effort from Jamie Proctor that saw a combination of Matt Macey and Alan Sheehan clear the ball off the line.

Before the half-time interval, Sheehan came to the Hatters rescue again, getting a block to an effort from John O`Sullivan that saw the ball loop up onto the top of the net.

The second half saw Luton trying to force the issue and Hylton went close when his powerful shot looked destined for the top corner until the Carlisle keeper, Mark Gillespie, got his finger-tips to the ball to divert it onto the bar and over for a corner.

An accident involving the Luton defender Dan Potts, who was carried away on a stretcher after a clash of heads, saw ten minutes of stoppage time played but neither side could grab that elusive goal and Luton were left to rue what might have been.
