Luton still trail Best

The player that Mike Newell spoke of earlier this week is Southampton's Leon Best.

Mike Newell was reported to have been in discussions with a club for an unnamed player, and said that they thought they had agreed a price but then were told he was not for sale but Luton could have him on loan. Later the club said he could not be loaned but Luton could buy him and the price had doubled. Luton made an offer that was rejected and Newell stated that it left a nasty taste in his mouth.

The player concerned was Leon Best as had been mooted on the unofficial websites, and, as if to concentrate Newell's mind, Southampton extended Best's loan arrangement with Yeovil Town, when negotiations with the Town broke down.

In the meantime, Newell signed Drew Talbot from Sheffield Wednesday, but he has not given up on signing Best before Wednesday's transfer deadline.

Luton's shortcomings given their much depleted, injury-ridden squad have been there for all to see, and following Luton's poor run of form in November, and only two points from their last five league matches, despite some improved performances, they find themselves hovering dangerously above the drop zone.

The fans are restless and it seems inevitable that the drop looms unless cover is obtained quickly, or that the injury crisis is alleviated, and the second of those scenarios is in the lap of the Gods, so we all wait with bated breath, for at least two more new faces by Wednesday.
