Jones - Vassell Can Go As Far As He Wants

Luton Town manager Nathan Jones has admitted that Isaac Vassell can go as far as he wants in the game but he love him to sign a new contract at the club amid Birmingham City interest.

The belief is that he's been offered a new contract with his existing deal running out next summer, but over the weekend there was strong speculation of an interest from Championship Birmingham City and Bristol Rovers have already seen a bid rejected.

Having scored twice in our rout of Yeovil Town last weekend, the fact he turns 24 in September means Luton face the option of cashing in now or potentially losing him for nothing.

The Berkshire News questioned Jones on the subject of a new offer being made, and he explained.

'That's (contract) in house, but everyone that's here now we pretty much want to keep. Isaac knows our feelings towards him and we would like him to be here for a long long time. We'd like him to sign a long term deal, and if he wants to do that we'll do that, but Isaac's a player we would like to have here long term.'

Jones went on to say that at this stage of his career he feels his development will be best served by remaining with us, but obviously it also comes down to what Vassell wants.

'He's only had a year in our midst but he's developed in such a way that's fantastic. To be fair, it's probably not even been a year. We gave him four or five months of real development, then had a decision at Christmas whether or not to send him out on loan, but we chose to continue his development here as we felt there was something there. Second half of the season he kicked right on. He came back in pre-season in wonderful form, and that's where we are.'

He went on to add that there is a buzz about what can be achieved at the club and he's hopes Vassell sees that for himself.

'It's not just JJ and Pelly. People like Danny Hylton and Tyreeq Bakinsin have signed long term too, and trusted us with their development and with their futures. Others have come from clubs higher up like Andrew Shinnie, Elliot Lee and Alan McCormack. They will have had significant other offers but they came there because they see what we're doing. We hope Isaac will follow suit, but we can't second guess anyone - all we can concentrate on our day to day things.'

Even if Vassell does sign a new extension, Jones knows it's inevitable that we will lose him at some stage.

'He can go as far as he wants to go. He has certain attributes which are different from other people and he has a desire to do well. He knows there's a lot going on and people are speaking about him, but he's only a year into his development. He's the best lad you will ever meet. He looks you in the eye and you know what you will get from him. He wants to get better and he deserves everything he will get, but right now he's focused on doing well for us.'
