Checkatrade - Luton 2 Spurs U21 2 (4-2 on pens)

Last night, Luton opened their Checkatrade Trophy account with a fixture against a Tottenham Hotspur U21 side.

After having exited the EFL Cup, at the 1st round stage, at the hands of Ipswich Town, Nathan Jones was looking forward to a chance of getting the Hatters going in another cup competition.

The fixture also gave Jones the chance to play some of his fringe squad members whilst also giving Danny Hylton and James Justin the chance to get some much-needed match fitness with both having not featured at all this season, due to injuries.

The Hatters established an early advantage over Tottenham when Luke Gambin gave them the lead.

However, the North London side, cheered on by an away support that exceeded 400, were to equalise through Ryan Loft and then take the lead through an own goal from the Hatters keeper James Shea.

But the Hatters persistence in getting something from this game paid dividends when Josh McQuoid levelled in the fifty-first minute.

Both sides had chances to win the game but it was to finish 2-2 and head to a penalty shoot-out to see who claimed the additional point that could prove decisive in the group stages.

As it turned out it was to be Luton`s night when the Tottenham Hotspur duo of Samuel Shasoua and Keanan Bennetts both fluffed their spot-kicks giving Luton a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory.

It was just a shame there weren`t more Hatters in the ground to witness the win.
