Luton 1 Portsmouth 0 (FA Cup 1st Round)

At Kenilworth Road, the Hatters earned a place in the second round of the FA Cup beating Portsmouth by a solitary goal.

In what was an entertaining game that deserved more than the 5000+ that entered through the turnstiles, with 1000+ of them packed into the Oak Road to cheer Portsmouth on, it was a first-half stoppage time goal, from James Collins that gave the Hatters victory over a club that won the FA Cup back in 2008 when they graced the Premier League.

The Hatters goal came on the stroke of half-time when Danny Hylton provided an assist for Collins to smash the ball home in front of the away support, the goal was the 9th of the season for the striker.

However, Luton Town owe a debt of thanks to Marek Stech for their place in the second round. The goalkeeper produced some outstanding saves to deny Potsmouth.

Stech denied Brett Pitman when he got to the Portsmouth players fierce drive to tip it over the bar and also made a wonderful save to keep out a header from Matt Clarke.

When Stech was finally beaten by an effort from Jamal Lowe, Alan Sheehan was on hand to hack the ball clear off the line.

But the attacking action didn`t only come from Portsmouth, Luton created good chances which they, on another day, might have converted with Hylton heading straight at the Portsmouth keeper, Luke McGee, whilst McGee also did well to push an effort from Luke Berry onto the frame of the goal.

Portsmouth finished the game with ten-men when Nathan Thompson, six minutes from the end, picked up a second yellow card for a cynical trip on Collins.

Here`s hoping that the Hatters get a favourable draw in round two and then we can start to dream of a big-money tie with a Premier League giant in the 3rd round.
