FA Cup 3rd Round - Newcastle 3 Luton 1

The Hatters crashed out of the FA Cup in a thrilling encounter at St James Park.

Cheered on by close to 8,000 travelling fans, the Hatters didn`t quite have enough to become FA Cup giant-killers against Newcastle United, of the Premier League.

After battling hard for the first thirty-minutes, the Hatters were undone in a nine-minute spell that saw our hosts score three-times.

The first-goal, on thirty minutes, came after Marek Stech couldn`t hold on to a free-kick from Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez was on hand to tap the ball home.

The Hatters barely had time to refocus before, six minutes later, they were 2-0 down, the goal coming after Stech had denied Gayle but couldn`t prevent Perez from stabbing the ball home.

Three minutes later, in the thirty-ninth minute, the game was effectively over when, after a flowing Newcastle move, Jonjo Shelvey added to Luton`s woes.

However, any thoughts of how heavily Luton were going to be beaten were eradicated by a much better second-half performance.

Four minutes into the second-half, Danny Hylton reduced the arrears after a spell of Luton pressure.

With the travelling army still in full voice Luton could have added a second when Hylton had a goal disallowed.

Perhaps the realisation that it wasn`t going to be the Hatters day came when Elliot Lee, joining his brother Ollie on the pitch against the team their father Rob, played for, saw an effort crash against the cross-bar.

The giant-killing we`d all hoped for didn`t happen, but the Hatters gave a good account of themselves and were far from being disgraced.
