Luton: Triallists fail to impress

Luton`s recent triallists have all been dismissed having failed to impress manager Kevin Blackwell.

Arsenal youngster Joe O'Cearuill was given a torrid time at Dagenham, while Aussie Mark Byrne and former Watford man Marvin McCoy fared little better with insipid displays.

Blackwell also saw insufficient quality in Norwegian giant Oyvind Hoas and will not be signing him. Xavier Barrau, Alexis Bertin and Joel Grant have all failed to earn contracts.

The only remaining hopeful from the bunch, who was in the squad which drew 0-0 with Rushden & Diamonds was former Newcastle United trainee, winger Martin Brittain. He did not play but is still looking a likely signing with Blackwell commenting to Luton Today:

'I still have to speak to Martin, but I'm not taking any of the others on.

'We've sent them all back. We've had a look at them, but we won't be taking them on.

'I'm not going to be spending the club's money unless I'm absolutely sure on a player.'

Chris Perry and Chris Coyne are the only Centre backs left after Barnett`s departure and Blackwell stated that he is still trying to rectify that continuing:

We're still trying to address that situation.

'We're trying to get one more experienced centre half in and one more young centre half.

'We're also still hopeful of getting another goalkeeper.'

The Luton manager was happy with his new signings` performances during the match with Rushden

He said: 'Both (Dave) Edwards and (Alan) Goodall looked accomplished players.

'Edwards has impressed people not with just what he does off the ball, but also with what he does on it.

'He shows good awareness on the ball and even when there are people near him he knows he can let the ball run through his legs, or turn.

'Goodall showed what a good defender he is, because that was a competitive game and there were tackles flying in there.

'Darren Currie needs sharpening up a little bit, but he showed what great ability he has on the ball.

'(Paul) Peschisolido and (Paul) Furlong, I've said I will use sparingly this season, but we wanted to get minutes into them and we've been able to do that.'

'You've got to remember that is Sam's first competitive 45 minutes in the best part of a year.

'You have to say that Sam (Parkin) has shown a real appetite to get fit.

'He's done what's been asked of him over the summer and has come in to the club and I hope he gets his just rewards.'
