Luton sign Jackson

Luton Town have announced the signing of Derby County defender Richard Jackson.

The 28-year-old who is primarily a full-back, but who can play in central defence, joins on a two year contract.

Jackson, Derby's longest serving player until his release on Monday, joined the Rams in 1999 from Scarborough.

he has some Premiership experience but did not feature as much as he would have liked in their promotion season, with only 5 starts.

he told Lutontown.co.uk:

'I wasn't really getting a game at Derby and I need to be getting matches under my belt at this stage of my career.

'I wanted to come to a team who will be challenging for promotion this season and I think, with all the signings that have been made at the Club, that will happen.

'I have had a good pre-season with Derby. I have played three games so far so I am fit and ready to go for the new season.

'The move has happened really quick for me

so I haven't had much time to take it all in. As soon as I spoke to the manager I knew I wanted to sign.'

'I spoke to both of them (Peschisolido and Currie) before I signed. I liked what they had to say about the place and in particular what the manager had to say. I just want to be involved in what is going on at the Club.

'Kevin's ambitions for the Club and where he wants to go helped me make my mind up really quickly.

'I just want to get playing again now. Obvisously I didn't play much last season and I want to get back playing on a Saturday afternoon and I am really looking forward to it.'

Kevin Blackwell told www.lutontown.co.uk:

'Richard can play in a number of positions. He has been playing in the Championship with Derby County and it means I have a player of good standard.

'I think it just improves the depth of the squad. I want to make sure we are a bit stronger in defence and he fits the type of player I am looking for.'

However, it still leaves us short a keeper and at least 1 specialist central defender!
