Luton signing no 9

Kevin Blackwell has completed his ninth signing of the summer as predicted in his pre-match press conference by adding Norwich City striker Paul McVeigh.

The former Northern Ireland international has signed a two-year contract at Kenilworth Road.

McVeigh's career began at Tottenham, where he remained for 4 seasons playing only 3 games, but his spell at Norwich City, which ended with his release at the end of last season, spanned 7 years.

He joined Norwich in March 2000 on a free transfer, and was their leading scorer in 2002-3 with 15 goals.

McVeigh was in the Canaries' promotion team a year later and played a bit part for them in the Premiership, including a goal at Old Trafford.

In the 2005/6 season he scored eight times in two months landing the player of the month award over the Christmas period, a traditional thin time for Luton strikers!

The 30 yr old has played for Northern Ireland 20 times.

McVeigh had a short spell on loan with Burnley last season including an appearance against Luton in Kevin Blackwell's first game in charge, where he showed a lot of endeavour but found Dean Brill in good form in a 0-0 draw.

Plymouth Argyle gave Paul a lengthy trial in July and wanted to sign him, but in the end he chose to come to Luton, yet again proving that Kavin Blackwell is very persuasive in negotiations with players.

While he should be a class act in this division, and a signing we should be pleased about, the secret squirrel shenanigans about the unnamed ninth signing in Thursday's pre match press conference caused speculation that the next signing would be a centre back and as such McVeigh's arrival has been met with a little disappointment by many fans. This is in disappointment at the lack of cover in defence rather than in the signing of the player who will be another quality addition to the squad.

Cue signing no 10?
