Newell linked to Leicester vacancy

The Sun has linked Town manager Mike Newell to the Leicester City vacancy, caused by the sacking of former Hearts manager Craig Levein.

The report stated: 'Newell will stun Luton by quitting to take over the Leicester hot seat next week. Newell has been approached by Foxes bigwigs and has informed the Hatters he wants to take the job.'

A spokesperson for the Hatters said: 'We are not going to comment on speculation.'

Considering Leicester’s current league position and financial status, I cannot think why he would be interested in a move to the Walkers Stadium. After his success at Hartlepool and with Luton, Newell, who had his 41st birthday just last week, is linked with every vacancy that arises. (Cue Newell to Newcastle rumours)

Newell is known to be unhappy about the lack of progress with regard to a new stadium, but in the recent transfer window, he was able to make bids of £500000 for Neil Danns and Adam Boyd, and that is fantasy money for a club like Luton. The board is giving him all the backing they can.

However, regardless of the fact that Mike has enjoyed success with Luton Town, he is still very inexperienced and I would have thought that Premiership clubs and clubs with big money to spend would like to see him spend a little more time building his profile before taking a punt on him.

Luton Chairman Bill Tomlins has denied receiving any approach from Leicester City, and insisted that the manager was happy to remain at the club.

"We have had no official approach from Leicester," Tomlins said.

"I can understand why there is speculation, but I do not want to lose him.

Mike is a former Leicester player, but he is very happy at Luton and we have a very good relationship.

He is a very good manager and we are 100% committed to hanging onto him."

Tomlins added: "There may come a time when Mike moves on - but I imagine it would be to a club in a higher league."
