Hatter Heroes (C) - George CUMMINS
Glancing through the annuls of our history, one thing that struck me was the distinct lack of players who have wore our jersey with surnames that begin with the letter 'C`
I contemplated running a piece on Steve Clarridge or Alec Chamberlain but I didn`t quite think either had done enough to warrant being termed a legend.
Instead, I continued to delve and I stumbled across a certain George Cummins
Born on the 12th March 1931, Cummins played for Luton for 8 years, notching up 21 goals in 184 games. Described as an inside forward, Cummins began his career playing for St Patricks Athletic, in Ireland, before, in October 1950, joining Everton.
Unfortunately, for both parties, he didn`t really click at Goodison Park, making just 24 appearances, but failing to trouble the scorers, before joining Luton in 1953.
Eight years later, after leaving Luton, Cummins went on to play for Cambridge City and Hull City.
In modern times, whereby loyalty to one club is a thing of the past, Cummins was a loyal Hatters servant although I doubt if many of our readers will have had the pleasure to see him perform.
George, sadly, is no longer with us having passed away on 29th November 2009.
