Hatters Heroes (F) - Steve Foster

Hatters Heroes (F) - Steve Foster
As we continue our on-going series, we`re at the sixth letter of the alphabet and there really can be only one choice for this letter - Steve Foster.

Foster will always be remembered fondly by Luton Town supporters, after all we`re seriously lacking in captains who led us to major honours, but that`s what Foster did back in 1988 when un-fancied Luton beat Arsenal 3-2 in a thrilling Littlewoods Cup Final.

Aside from his leadership skills and his lion-hearted displays, Foster will forever be associated with that white headband that contributed to an almost warrior like appearance.

Foster started his career as an associate schoolboy with Southampton but it was with their local rivals Portsmouth, in 1973, where he earned his first professional contract, strangely enough as a centre-forward as opposed to a swashbuckling centre back.

His career as a centre forward lasted but one season before the Pompey manager, Ian St John (of Saint and Greavsie fame) converted him to a centre back. Foster remained at Portsmouth, the town he was born in, until 1979 when he moved down the south coast to play for Brighton and Hove Albion.

The highlight of his Brighton career was an appearance in the FA Cup Final, against Manchester United, a final that United won, convincingly, in a replay. Sadly, that season saw Brighton also suffer relegation.

In March 1984, Foster left Brighton to sign for Aston Villa, his stay at Villa Park was relatively short, just eight months and in November 1984 he joined Luton Town Football Club. Foster remained at Kenilworth Road for five years making over 160 league appearances before moving to Oxford United and later returning to Brighton where he remained until he retired.
